AIO (AI Optimization / AI Overviews)
A catch-all acronym for optimizing toward AI answers — sometimes 'AI Optimization', sometimes shorthand for Google's AI Overviews specifically.
AIO is an ambiguous, still-settling acronym you will see used two ways. Most often it means 'AI Optimization' — a broad label for trying to be surfaced and cited by AI answer systems, overlapping heavily with GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization). Occasionally people use AIO as shorthand for Google's 'AI Overviews' specifically, the AI-generated answer box at the top of some results.
Because the term is fuzzy and marketers have rushed to coin acronyms, treat AIO with healthy skepticism. There is no separate, secret 'AIO technique' that bypasses the fundamentals: whether you call it AIO, GEO, or AEO, an AI system can only cite a page it can crawl, has indexed, and judges relevant and trustworthy. The honest version of AIO is the same work as good SEO plus measuring whether AI engines actually cite you — not a new lever you can pull, and certainly not a placement you can buy.
